Swimming pools come in all shapes and
sizes, but nearly all of them, from the above-ground pool in
the backyard to water park wave pool, work in the same basic
way. They use pumps and a combination of filtration and
chemical treatments to continually cycle and clean a large
volume of water. Basically, swimming pools are pretty
simple--they're just large basins of water.
The technology used to keep a swimming clean and disease
free, is however, quite complicated. A typical swimming pool
needs seven major components: a basin (be it fiberglass,
plastic or concrete/gunite); a motorized pump; a water
filter; a chemical feeder; a systems of drains and returns;
and plumbing to connect all these elements. Some pools also
utilize a heater to keep the water at a desired temperature.
The primary objective is to pump water in a continuous
cycle, from the pool through the filters and chemical
treatment systems and back to the pool again. In this
manner, the pumping system keeps the water relatively free
of dirt, debris, and bacteria.
Swimming pool costs vary widely, with some good above-ground
pools starting at $1,500 and in-ground concrete pools going
from $17,000-$45,000. Of course depending on the size of the
pool, the material used, the choice of deck surface, the
complexity of the design and added accessories like
underwater music or colored lighting the costs could be
considerably more.
